Chatwood not as ready as McBride

Tyler Chatwood looks rough
Tyler Chatwood was recalled from Double-A Tulsa because he looked promising there with an ERA of 3.00 and the Rockies were sweating for answers to the question - who's next -- to start for us?

Chatwood has physical talent but he's not a major-league pitcher, at least not now. That was known to those who payed attention to his body of work in both the majors (7.62 ERA in 13 innings) and Triple-A (5.79 ERA in 37 1/3 innings) earlier this season.

On Sunday, Chatwood threw just 49 percent (38-of-77) of his pitches for strikes in allowing four walks and three runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Of course, he fits in with a pitching staff that proved to be an excellent host to the visiting San Francisco Giants, serving up 35 runs in the three-game series.

Rookie hitting and striking out

Matt McBride hitting early in Rockies' career
Matt McBride, a 27-year old rookie, fresh up from Triple-A, played his second game in the majors and produced another hit and is now hitting .500 (3-for-6) with a pair of RBI. His dad even got to see his son play in person. Excellent story all the way around.

McBride, who hit for .354 with 36 doubles and 10 homers for Colorado Springs, has struck out three times so he will soon have to learn to make more contact, to at least make the defense field the ball. For now, the outfielder is off to a hot start.
